SPFPA: Organization and Representation Since 1948

SPFPA, the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA), was originally known as the United Plant Guard Workers of America (UPGWA)—an international, independent guard union that first came into existence following passage of the Taft-Hartley Act. Certified by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in 1948, the organization initially consisted of more than 1,200 members and 12 local chapters across five states.

The beginning of the 21st Century brought along significant changes for the SPFPA—those that continue to shape the organization and which endure to this day. Not only did the organization undergo a major name change, it also expanded its scope to better represent the varied interests of members in such occupations as campus police, nuclear security, airport screening, court security and more.

The Union now boasts more than 200 Locals and over 27,000 members across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.
